Partnership Opportunity: Atmosfair

The Southern African Biogas Industry Association (SABIA) is pleased to share a partnership opportunity by atmosfair.

atmosfair gGmbH is a non-profit climate protection organisation based in Berlin. They develop and finance biogas projects with local partners throughout the Global South.

Their primary goal is mitigating the effects of climate change by supporting decarbonization through projects which reduce emissions. To enable their support, they certify the emission reductions and retire the resulting carbon credits on behalf of voluntary clients. As a German non-profit they cannot distribute profit, so any surplus goes back into new projects.

What they can offer
  • Upfront finance, usually concessional debt. Where a project is too risky for commercial lenders, atmosfair can step in. Funds are released in tranches against agreed project milestones, and collateral is required. They do not fund a full project, and they do not offer grants.
  • Long term carbon credit offtake. Secured future revenue that lets you lower the price of a digester for the end user or close the gap on a plant that does not quite pay for itself.
  • Carbon project development. Registration under the Gold Standard or Paris Agreement Crediting Mechanism, navigating methodologies, and so on is part of their core expertise.

What they look for in a biogas project
  • Local partner with a track record.
  • Skin in the game. They expect the developer and other financiers to carry real exposure.
  • Feedstocks: Food waste, agricultural residues, municipal solid waste. Wastewater and manure case by case. No energy crops.
  • Scale: Large, centralised sites processing >30 tonnes per day feedstock. Programmes aggregating many small units (e.g., >2000 digesters) may also be eligible.
  • Projects where carbon revenue is required to push projects over the edge of viability. Plants already built or already financed generally do not qualify.
  • Strong social benefits and the achievement of at least 3 SDGs.
